He called today “the moment of greatest sadness”; for him and all family members.
“In this period of mourning and change, my family and I will be comforted and supported by the respect and deep affection that the queen enjoyed. I know that her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country, all territories, the commonwealth and countless people throughout the world, — says the statement.
Charles automatically became king after the death of Elizabeth II. Formally, he should be declared a monarch by the Council of Succession, which will meet within a day after the death of the previous monarch.
The official proclamation ceremony of Charles as King of Great Britain will take place at St. James's Palace in London as soon as possible, writes The Guardian .
Charles III is 73 years old and has been in the line of succession for 64 years since he received the title of Prince of Wales in 1958. He is the absolute record holder in the history of Great Britain for the longest stay in the status of heir to the throne.
