On September 2, deputies of the parliamentary group “Zhana Kazakhstan” made a proposal to return the name of Astana to the Kazakh capital. (“New Kazakhstan”) of the Kazakh Mazhilis (lower house of parliament). “We consider it wrong when during the life of a person a city is called by his name, moreover, the people also did not accept the new name of the capital. Therefore, it will be historically fair to return the former name of the capital— Astana»,— stated in their statement.

Astana was renamed Nur-Sultan in honor of the first president of the republic, Nursultan Nazarbayev, in March 2019. A decree to this effect was signed by his successor, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, who put forward the proposal. At the same time, the inhabitants of the city continued to be called Astana residents.

The inhabitants of Kazakhstan did not accept the new name— before the renaming, uncoordinated rallies took place, and after that petitions were created with calls to return the city to its former name. In addition, during the protests in January this year, the protesters demanded to remove Nazarbayev from politics.

Against this background, the relatives of the first president lost key positions in the state, commemorative plaques mentioning him began to be removed from institutions. Nazarbayev himself was removed from the life-long chairmanship of the Assembly of the People of Kazakhstan (ANC) and the Security Council, as well as the title and privileges of the Elbasy & mdash; leader of the nation. In addition, he stopped leading the ruling Nur Otan party. (later changed its name to “Amanat”).
